First of all, you need to know that the module is optional except if you would like to use network emulation settings in your population. Otherwise no need to compile that module.

Second, you said that the module does not compile properly, could you provide the output of your compilation to see the type of error. 

What is the exact kernel and gcc versions installed on your system?
